Critical Skills Occupation List Ireland 2026: Which Jobs Qualify and What Has Changed

The Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) is the most sought-after work permit in Ireland. It offers a two-year permit with no labour market test, a direct path to Stamp 4 residency, and immediate family reunification rights. But not every job qualifies. The occupation must appear on the Critical Skills Occupation List maintained by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
Top Sectors on the 2026 List
Technology continues to dominate. Software developers, data scientists, data engineers, DevOps specialists, cybersecurity analysts, and product managers all remain on the list. Cloud architects and AI/ML engineers were added in recent updates, reflecting Ireland's growing role as a European tech hub.
Healthcare roles have expanded significantly. Medical practitioners, nurses in specialist areas, radiographers, physiotherapists, and clinical psychologists are all on the list. The ongoing staffing crisis in the HSE has kept healthcare as the fastest-growing category for critical skills permits.
Engineering roles remain strong, particularly civil engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and quantity surveyors. The construction boom and infrastructure investment under the National Development Plan are driving demand.
Science and research positions including biochemists, bioinformatics specialists, and environmental scientists also qualify. Ireland's pharma and biopharma sector, home to 9 of the top 10 global pharmaceutical companies, sustains consistent demand.
How the List Affects Your Permit Application
If your role is on the Critical Skills list, you benefit from a lower salary threshold (EUR 40,904 with a degree) and no requirement for the employer to first advertise the role to EU candidates. If your role is not on the list but also not on the Ineligible Occupations List, you can still apply for a CSEP at the higher threshold of EUR 68,911.
How to Check If Your Job Qualifies
Each occupation on the list is tied to a specific SOC code. Your job title does not need to match exactly, but the duties described in your contract must align with the SOC code description. A company might call the role 'Platform Engineer' but the permit application could reference SOC code 2136 (Programmers and Software Development Professionals). Get the alignment right before applying.
